The AVIV South Coast program integrates Animal Assisted Psychotherapy and eco-therapy to create a therapeutic experience that is experiential, grounded, and accessible to diverse communities. Required QualificationsMaster’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or a related field.
Passion for Animal Assisted Therapy and eco-therapy, with a willingness to grow skills in these areas.
Willingness to complete and successfully pass a background check.
Comfort working with animals, nature, and outdoor environments in a variety of weather conditions throughout the year.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage scheduling independently.
A passion for improving access to mental health care and challenging the status quo of traditional treatment models.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
Experience working with diverse populations across the lifespan.
Cultural competency and experience working with LGBTQ+ populations.
Ability to maintain a consistent schedule as agreed upon with the clinic.
Willingness to travel for clinical trainings (up to one week at a time).
Strong communication skills and the ability to advocate for one’s professional needs within a collaborative team environment.
Additional Qualifications (Preferred)
Certification in ARCH or another Animal Assisted Psychotherapy program.
Experience training animals, including dogs (formal or informal).
Foreign language proficiency, particularly Spanish and/or Portuguese.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain active professional licensure and adhere to the ethical standards of the clinician’s governing body (ACA, AMHCA, APA, MaMHCA, NASW, etc.). Clinicians working toward licensure must actively pursue and maintain progress toward licensure.
Maintain active malpractice insurance and provide proof of coverage.
Follow all policies and procedures outlined in the AVIV Employee Handbook.
Attend weekly team meetings and scheduled group supervision.
Complete formal Animal Assisted Psychotherapy Training (AAPT) within nine months of employment.
Develop thoughtful and effective treatment plans that incorporate Animal Assisted Therapy when appropriate.
Diagnose mental health conditions, create treatment plans, and provide individual, family, and group therapy services.
Maintain accurate, timely, and professional documentation within the clinic’s electronic health record system and participate in documentation audits when requested.
Collect session payments and fees at the time of service in accordance with clinic policies.
Assist with farm-related responsibilities as needed, including animal care, feeding, and basic property or garden tasks.
Caseload Expectations
This position begins as fee-for-service while the clinician builds a caseload.
Full-time status is defined as an average of 27 clinical sessions per week, calculated across a four-week period.
CompensationThe posted salary range for this position is $60,000 – $90,000, depending on licensure status, training, and experience. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications and role expectations.

The AVIV PVD location offers a flexible therapeutic environment including traditional office-based therapy, canine-assisted sessions, and walk-and-talk therapy in the surrounding downtown Providence area. Clinicians must be organized, adaptable, and open to collaborative learning and feedback.

This location is also home to many of AVIV’s couples therapy services and includes a child specialist who works with children as young as two years old. Clinicians at this site may have opportunities to work with individuals, couples, families, and children depending on their training and interests.

The AVIV Virtual Team provides therapy through secure telehealth platforms, offering flexible and accessible care to clients across the region. This role is ideal for clinicians who value flexibility, independence, and the ability to connect with clients in a virtual environment while remaining part of a supportive clinical community.
